CHOOSING YOUR CARAVAN AWNING

There are four different categories of awning:

WINTER – Winter awnings are suitable for long term use all year round. You will need to do everything advised by the awning manufacturer to take care of your awning and keep the warranty valid.

SEASONAL – Seasonal awnings are suitable for constant use or for long periods between March – October.

TOURING – Touring awnings are suitable for use March -September. Ideal for long touring holidays and short breaks away.

LIGHTWEIGHT – Lightweight awnings are designed to be put up and taken down easily and are ideal for long weekends and touring holidays April -September.

Before choosing your awning, it is important to consider the following questions:

When are you likely to use the awning and for how long? Are you staying in one place or travelling regularly, and will this be to places with varying climates?

Fabric and poles vary based on what type of awning you choose. Seasonal awnings have stronger & denser fabrics. Touring awnings have lighter fabrics. Frames are usually steel, aluminium or fibreglass. Steel poles are the strongest and most suited to winter and seasonal awnings, fibreglass & aluminium poles are lighter and more suited to touring.

Please note that different manufacturers use different terminology, double check with us that the awning will be fit for purpose before purchasing.

Measuring your caravan for an awning.

Most modern caravan manufacturers will list the awning size in the handbook.

If you do not have the handbook, take a piece of string and measure from the ground at the front of the caravan (A) all the way around the awning rail to the ground at the back of the caravan (B). Allowing the string to come down at an angle both ends.

Lay the string on the ground and measure it in centimetres. This will give you the caravan’s awning size.

Measuring for a porch awning.

Measure the straight flat part of the roof from front to back to get the maximum length that will fit your caravan. Measure the height of the caravan from the ground.

Be mindful of where doors, windows and vents are situated. Porch awnings are designed to fit over windows but in some cases you may not be able to use a window if blocked.
